Have you ever had something happen, only to find yourself lying in bed with your mind racing and emotions running high, eventually leading to a cycle of sleepless nights?
In psychology, one theory used to understand insomnia is Pavlovian conditioning—where the bed becomes a trigger for tension or other feelings. Here is how it works:
A bell rings, signaling to a dog that food is coming, which makes the dog salivate. Eventually, the dog salivates at the sound of the bell even when no food is provided.
Similarly, when you lie in bed and start worrying, your body experiences tension. Over time, just lying in bed can trigger that same feeling of tension, even when you aren't thinking about anything stressful.
So, when you can't fall asleep, try getting out of bed and doing some breathing exercises. The goal is to help your brain associate the bed with relaxation and sleepiness again!
I hope you all get a good night's sleep tonight! 🥹🥹🥹
