Have you ever been in a rush, running late, and feeling incredibly anxious while on your way?
I had a similar experience today because I left the house late and was rushing to attend a wedding. As I sat in the car trying to calm down, I thought of the Serenity Prayer by the American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr. He asked for three things:
- The serenity to accept the things I cannot change;
- The courage to change the things I can; and
- The wisdom to know the difference. I had an important role to play at the wedding today and needed to stay calm, so I decided to close my eyes for the rest of the ride to avoid getting more anxious as I watched the traffic.
I wonder, in the face of the current situation in Hong Kong or the state of the world, does this prayer offer us any inspiration or insight?
