
When asked what they consider to be "suffering," many people point to illness, bereavement, social conditions, or a sense of powerlessness. Clinical psychologist Alan Chan explains that suffering is an abstract concept, encompassing hardship, pain, distress, and loneliness. In English, it can be translated as "pain" or "suffering."
